Michael Polk’s Rise Through Kraft Foods Leadership Ranks

Before he became a public company chief executive, Michael Polk Newell Brands spent nearly two decades climbing the ranks of two of the largest consumer goods companies in the world. His first major stop after Harvard Business School was Kraft Foods, where he built a career that would eventually carry him across three continents.

Polk started in brand management and sales at Kraft, learning the commercial side of the food business from the ground level. He advanced into general management, taking charge of the Post Cereals division across North America before moving into an international assignment overseeing Kraft Foods International’s business in the Asia Pacific region. Each posting added a new layer of experience, from domestic brand building to running operations across different regulatory and cultural environments.

Leading the Nabisco Integration

The most demanding assignment of Polk’s Kraft tenure came after the company acquired Nabisco. He was chosen to lead and run the integration of the two organizations, a task that involved merging supply chains, sales forces, and corporate cultures under one roof. Successfully folding a company, the size of Nabisco into Kraft required the kind of cross-functional coordination that would later define his approach to corporate change.

That reputation traveled. In 2003, Unilever recruited Michael Polk away from Kraft to lead its USA Foods business, a move that placed him inside another consumer products giant with an even larger global footprint. Within a few years he was overseeing Unilever’s operations across North and Latin America as president of the Americas region.

Looking back at those Kraft years, they read less like a single job and more like an apprenticeship in nearly every function a consumer goods executive needs: brand building, international operations, and the delicate work of merging two large companies into one. That grounding would serve Michael Polk well when he eventually took the top job at Newell Rubbermaid. Read this article for additional information.
